We celebrate 211 Day every February 11th, but what is it and why should you care?
What do you need every day to live? Most people will list the necessities: water, food, shelter, sleep, and clothing. But what if you didn’t have access to these necessities? That’s why 211 matters. Every. Single. Day.
211 is a 24/7 confidential call center that connects people with locally-available resources. When you call 211, you are talking to a real agent who provides real help. Everyone faces unexpected life events, such as natural disasters, job loss, and financial problems just to name a few. During times like these, 211 is a lifeline. Agents can connect you to resources that will provide real, immediate help. In 2025 alone, Missouri’s 211 agents assisted with upwards of 300,000 requests.
211 resources include, but are not limited to, housing, utilities, food, health, and clothing – the necessities people need every day. 211 is a free resource that is available in all 50 states and across Canada. It is also available in over 180 languages. 211 is available via text or call. However, if your phone service prohibits calling 3-digit numbers, you can also reach 211 operators by calling 1-800-427-4626.
In the Ozarks Region, our top three needs are rent assistance, utilities assistance, and homelessness prevention programs. Our 211 Coordinator, Colleen Neill, works to connect these needs with resources in the Ozarks Region, such as Help Give Hope, Ozark Area Community Action Corporation (OACAC), and Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri, just to name a few.
